Egypt to Implement Fuel-to-Gas Vehicle Conversion Plan Starting January 1, 2025

On December 23, Prime Minister Mustafa Madbouly of Egypt convened a meeting to discuss preparations for the country's vehicle fuel-to-gas conversion plan. This ambitious initiative, scheduled to commence on January 1, 2025, aims to transform 1.5 million fuel-powered vehicles to run on Compressed Natural Gas (CNG). The primary objectives of this plan are to decrease Egypt's dependence on petroleum products, mitigate carbon emissions, and reduce fuel costs. It is estimated that this program could lead to a yearly reduction of 15 million tons of carbon dioxide emissions in Egypt.

The plan underscores Egypt's commitment to transitioning towards cleaner energy sources and promoting sustainable development. With the implementation of this plan, Egypt aims to harness its abundant natural gas resources, discovered in recent years from a series of large gas fields in the Mediterranean Sea, to power a significant portion of its vehicle fleet. This shift is expected to not only benefit the environment but also to alleviate the financial burden on citizens by lowering fuel expenses, as natural gas is significantly cheaper than diesel and gasoline in Egypt.

This plan is a continuation of Egypt's previous initiatives to promote the use of natural gas in transportation, which have already seen tens of thousands of vehicles being converted to CNG.
