The Burgos City Council, Spain, has added five new compressed natural gas (CNG) buses to its municipal urban transport fleet. The vehicles were presented by the Mayor Cristina Ayala, along with the President of the Municipal Mobility and Transport Service César Barriada.
The new buses consist of two standard 12-meter models, with a capacity for 99 passengers, and three 18-meter articulated buses, which can carry up to 146 passengers. All run on compressed natural gas, an alternative fuel that, as the Mayor emphasized, significantly reduces polluting emissions compared to diesel, in addition to lowering operating costs per kilometer traveled.
Ayala framed this addition within the context of the increased use of public transport in the city, which has gained more than one million new users during the current legislative term. “This growth demands continued improvement of the service, both in capacity and in quality and sustainability,” he noted.
From a technical standpoint, the new vehicles have a maximum power of 235 horsepower and are equipped with advanced driver assistance systems. These include pedestrian detection devices, collision warnings, blind spot monitoring, intelligent driver assistance systems, and cameras that replace traditional rearview mirrors, with the aim of enhancing road safety.
Inside, the buses offer greater spaciousness and comfort, with adjustable LED lighting, acoustic information systems for the visually impaired, and designated spaces for people with reduced mobility, strollers, and wheelchairs. They also incorporate both electric and manual ramps to ensure full accessibility.
With these five new vehicles, the municipal fleet now comprises 75 buses, 53% of which already run on compressed natural gas. The investment for this project totaled 2.3 million euros.
