President Bola Tinubu inaugurated four large-scale Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) infrastructure projects covering Lagos, Abuja and Owerri, targeting transport decarbonization and domestic gas commercialization under the Midstream and Downstream Gas Infrastructure Fund (MDGIF).
The flagship Portland Gas CNG Mother Station in Ojota, Lagos, is equipped with two large-flow reciprocating mother station compressors, delivering a daily gas output of 96,000 standard cubic meters. The mother station directly taps national natural gas pipelines, compresses feed gas to 25 MPa, and fills high-pressure tube trailers to supply remote daughter stations across southwest Nigeria.
Three supporting CNG daughter stations were simultaneously put into operation. Each daughter station installs dedicated booster compressors to re-pressurize gas unloaded from tube trailers, without direct pipeline access. Operators highlighted that modular daughter station compressor skids cut construction cycles by 40% and enable fast deployment in logistics parks and suburban areas lacking pipeline networks.
Government officials stated the new compressor fleet will slash national diesel consumption by 18% within two years, while local manufacturers will supply 60% of mother/daughter station compression equipment by 2028 to reduce import costs.
